SOLÈNE ORTOLI

Trained in scenography at the Arts Décoratifs de Paris, my approach is now multi-disciplinary.

I work in Paris on a freelance basis and, through the events I attend, create artistic installations on a landscape scale (Festival des Jardins de Chaumont-sur-Loire, Nuit Blanche, Nuit des forêts, Festival des Hortillonnages). Alongside this approach, I'm also developing a more intimate form of painting, which resonates with the scenographic spaces I propose.

This pictorial part of my work has been exhibited in various group shows, at the Salon de Montrouge and more recently at the Artocène contemporary art biennial in Cha-monix.

Clarence Boulay's text on my paintings

Unfaithful mirrors, shadow plays with holes, bottomless pools, square branches... Solène Ortoli's paintings free themselves from all known reference points to unfold a singular world where time seems to stand still. This sense of suspension is all the more pervasive as it is counterbalanced by the presence of elements that we guess have or will disrupt the scene.

This tension gives rise to a remarkable dramatic depth. Bathed in light, Solène Ortoli's painting is unsettling in its apparent candor. But behind a pictu- ral vocabulary with naïve accents, the artist draws us into a dreamlike universe far more complex than it seems.

These canvases never cease to unsettle the eye: soft shapes, angular pillars, scattered bodies, erroneous perspectives, confusion between interior and exterior, the painter's plastic alphabet transports us into a world of intranquil serenity. The only stable element seems to be the omnipresent ground, but here again, the artist baffles us by making it the ma- trice of all her dreams.
